生徒さんから、「英語学習にお勧めのドラマって何ですか？」という質問を受けました。個人的におススメなのは、「Modern Family モダンファミリー」です。
Modern Familyのあらすじ
夫、妻、子ども三人の家族。コロンビア人の美女とその父親くらいの年の差夫婦＋連れ子。同性愛のカップルと養子の大家族の日常を描いています。
アメリカのABCで２００９年９月に初回放送されました。今は２０１８年なので、もう約１０年続いているドラマということになりますね。

クレアは、ジェイの娘で、ミチェルの姉です。クレアはフィルと結婚して、子どもは３人います。
ルーク、アレックス、ヘイリーです。クレアはシーズンの前半では、主婦でしたが、その後父親の会社で働くことになりました。
その後は会社を経営しています。
クレアは良い妻であり母親ではありますが、何でも管理するのが好きで、完璧主義でもあります。

Modern Familyって誰が見ても面白いの？
あまりに血まみれのシーンや、ゾンビが出てくるような映画だと、好き嫌いがあるかもしれません。

一日の終わりにゆっくり過ごしたい時に、このようなゾンビ系を観たい人は多くないかもしれません。
また、自分だけではなくて、カップルや家族でドラマを楽しみたい人もいるでしょう。
そんな時は、一応「誰が見ても」そこそこ面白いドラマがいいですよね。
Modern Familyは、現代の家族のトピックを取り上げていたり、所々にブラックジョークも見られるので、思わず「フフッ」と笑ってしまうようなドラマです。
JayとGloriaの間に生まれた息子Joeは、Gloriaのコロンビアの血を引いています。
コロンビアと言えば、地域によっては治安が悪く、盗みや誘拐も多発していることで知られています。
そのコロンビアの血を引く５歳児のJoeが
「I like stealing. It makes my heart fast. 盗むのって好き。心臓がどきどきするからね。」
こんなセリフを何の疑いもなしにさらっと言ったりします。
このようなジョークがところどころに見られるところが、「リラックスして誰でも楽しめる特徴」だと言えます。
どんなところが英語学習に効果的なの？
ただ字幕を見ているだけでは実は学習効果がありません。「あーあ、面白かった」で終わってしまいます。
Modern Familyは、一つのエピソードが２０分程度と短いもの。
なので、英語で考えたり、実際にメモしたりするのには効果的な長さです。
あまり２時間も３時間もする映画だと、楽しめますが見終わってみて「あの２時間前のシーンって…」と思い出すのが手間になったりしますから。
あとは映画を一時停止してメモすると、映画自体を楽しめないことにもなります。
なので、Modern Familyくらいの２０分でサクッと見られるドラマは最高の英語学習教材ということになります。
まとめ
Modern Familyの英語字幕+日本語解説で英語学習をすると、内容が面白いのでモチベーションもアップするでしょう。
最初は「あんなに速くしゃべってるなんて信じられない！」という印象を受けるかもしれませんが、英語字幕＋日本語字幕で何度も繰り返して見ていると、だんだんわかるようになってきます。
２０分くらいのエピソードなので、「勉強している」という気にもならず、何度でも繰り返して見られるので楽しく続けられます。
